I read a lot of great books this year -- more so than in past years -- I think because I picked more books to read that I thought might appeal to me rather than by picking books based off of "shoulds." I became more of a mood reader and that suited me. The Undercurrent by Sarah Sawyer was an excellent under-rated gem in my opinion. Such a great read! Highly recommend!

In 2024, I read more romance or romance-adjacent books than I ever have before! The majority of books that I read were my typical literary fiction with some memoir sprinkled in. I also see a theme of reading novels by British authors.

Interesting, what was it about the romance books that captured your attention do you think? Caryn mentioned in a comment in this thread that the escapism was what drew her and I feel the same, at least these past few months of the year.

It started off by reading two romance books chosen by others in my book club. After enjoying those, romance piqued my interest more. I realized that it’s nice to have lighter reads in the mix to balance out my typical literary fiction. It’s also satisfying to read a book every now and then that I can read quicker and use less brain power on.

I read much more romance than I normally do. I think the escapist quality of it is so alluring.

Totally get that. I have been doing the same these last few months. Escapism for sure.

I'm disappointed in my reading this year. I read a lot less than normal, mostly because my focus was terrible because of a crappy year over all. Hopefully next year is better!

So sorry to hear that, Chantal. Definitely hoping next year is better for you. Hope you can rest, mentally and physically and recharge. xo
